Project Summary:

After talking with Hal Aronson, founder of We Care Solar and We Share Solar and the creator of the solar suitcase, about what we could do that would be most beneficial for the organization, and thus those that they help; we settled on filming and editing an assembly tutorial video.

We all drove up to Berkeley on 11/11, leaving SLO at 7 AM and returning around 9 PM. We left early to make sure we didn’t hit any traffic and got to Berkeley with an hour to kill before meeting Hal, so we got breakfast. A little before noon we met Hal in person and be showed us in to the We Care Solar office which was in a building filled with other NGO’s offices.

Before filming anything, we talked with Hal for around 45 minutes. We learned how the idea for the solar suitcase came about through his wife’s visit to hospitals in Africa while studying maternal health.

We then got down to business and filmed the major video, the lightbox switch assembly. Once that was done, we filmed one more longer video about the use of solar panels and reading their energy outputs with a multimeter. Finally, we filmed two quick videos on troubleshooting and quality control regarding the solar suitcase which won’t need to be edited and are just for teachers to quickly reference.

After we were done filming, we talked with Hal again for a half hour and he gave us a couple shirts that We Care Solar gave out a recent event. We then headed home. From there, Kalie put together a trip recap video (see above) as well as edited the lightbox switch assembly tutorial, which was a lengthy process. We have just finished with the video and have uploaded it and sent it to Hal to see if there’s anything more he will need.
